Asian Karting Open Championship 2012 Round 2
Carmona Race Track
28 – 29 July 2012
Deserving a pat on the back this time, Sean Hudspeth had a good performance at the second round of the Asian Karting Open Championship (AKOC). Although the weekend could have gone better than it did, there were still a few positive achievements worth smiling for.
Held at the Carmona race track in Manila, The Philippines, Sean started well by clocking the best lap time of the whole weekend during Saturday morning practice. A wrong decision to change the gearing for qualifying cost him some pace, coming in only fourth for qualifying, just two-tenths of a second off the pole position time!
Into the three rounds of heats, the first one went pretty badly when a crash occurred and saw a DNF for Sean. The second heat was a wet one and a truly tough feat as Sean suffered a bent axle after a first-lap incident on top of the wrong set-up for the kart. He managed to finish 12th, just outside the top 10 though. Things got back on track (pun fully intended) in the third heat with Sean coming in third and the fastest lap time for that heat!
With a consolidated heat position of 11th, it was another wet race for the pre-final and Sean only managed to improve one spot to finish 10th, facing problems of not getting enough heat in the tyres. A similar problem occurred in the (very wet) final, which was red-flagged and restarted due to the poor weather conditions. Sean eventually finish 9th in the Formula 125 Senior Open category of 22 drivers, also the highest Singaporean finisher for the race!
Commenting on the weekend, Sean said, “For sure it was not the result we were looking for, but on the plus side, we learned a huge amount on the driving part and on the behaviour of our new Tony Kart, both in the dry and in the wet. A big thank you to Simon Racing for the trust and support throughout the weekend! As ever… can’t wait for the next race!”
